What optics covers in Part 1

Expect vergence and the reduced eye, thin and thick lenses, refraction and accommodation, prisms, magnification and telescopes, wavefronts and basic aberrations, and the optics of everyday clinical instruments: the direct and indirect ophthalmoscope, the applanation tonometer, the retinoscope and the slit lamp. Build a firm grasp of sign conventions and unit conversions first; almost every calculation depends on them.

Why trainees find optics hard, and how to fix it

Optics is calculation-heavy, and it is the working, not the recall, that trips people up under time pressure. The fix is repetition: drill worked SBAs until the core formulae are automatic, and always review the derivation rather than just checking the final answer.
