Refraction Certificate Prisms & Lens Types
Prisms and lens forms are the part of the syllabus candidates most often meet for the first time at a focimeter, holding a pair of glasses they cannot immediately account for. Both topics are small, both are learnable away from the clinic, and both cost marks when left until late. This guide covers what to know and how to drill it.

Prisms: power, direction and where they appear
Know prism power in prism dioptres and what that unit actually describes, base direction and how it is recorded, and how prism is identified and quantified at a focimeter. Prentice's rule matters more than it first appears, because it explains the prismatic effect a patient experiences when looking away from the optical centre of a lens, which is how unintended prism arises from decentration. Fresnel prisms are worth recognising, since they read differently from a ground-in prism.
Lens types and what distinguishes them
Cover the basic forms first, meaning spherical, cylindrical and toric lenses and what each does to an image. Then the multifocals, including bifocal and varifocal designs and the near add they carry. Then the variations you meet in practice, such as aspheric and high-index lenses, lenticular forms for high powers, and what base curve means. The point is not to memorise a catalogue. It is to be able to pick up an unfamiliar pair of spectacles and say what kind of lens you are holding before you measure it.
How to revise prisms and lens types
Handle real lenses if you can, because recognition is far quicker from a few minutes with a trial case than from any amount of reading. For the calculations, drill prism and decentration questions with worked explanations until Prentice's rule is something you apply rather than something you look up. This is a small topic and it is genuinely finishable, so complete it early rather than leaving it as the thing you meant to get to.
