Retinoscopy is the backbone of the Refraction Certificate: most of the exam's stations involve it, on simulators and on patients. The hands-on skill only comes from supervised practice, but the optics behind it is very learnable, and being fluent in that optics makes the technique click faster. What the retinoscopy stations involve
The exam assesses simulated retinoscopy on artificial eyes and non-cycloplegic retinoscopy on patients. You are judged on your method and on an accurate result: recognising with and against movement, neutralising each meridian, allowing for your working distance, and recording the finding as a clear prescription. Streak retinoscopy and power-cross notation are the working language of the stations.
The optics to be fluent in
Know the working-distance correction and its dioptric equivalent cold, along with how the reflex changes as you approach neutrality, the effect of the correcting lens, and how to convert a gross finding into a net prescription. How to prepare for the retinoscopy stations
There is no shortcut for hands-on repetition, and candidates typically complete many supervised refractions before sitting. Alongside that, drill the underlying optics and notation with exam-style questions so the numbers never slow you down, and review each answer until the reasoning is second nature.
